Galicja na józefińskiej mapie topograficznej 1779 - 1783

Zdzisław Budzyński, Waldemar Bukowski, Bogusław Dybaś, Andrzej Janeczek, Zdzisław Noga (Rada Redakcyjna)

The topographic maps of the countries of the Habsburg monarchy made between 1763 and 1787 as part of the so-called Josephinian land survey (Josephinische Landesaufnahme) "are a monumental work, which from today's point of view counts among the most outstanding cartographic achievements of the late eighteenth century". (J. Dörflinger, 2004). Its part - with reference to the southern lands of the Republic of Poland occupied by Austria in the first partition in 1772 - is a map of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, the so-called Mieg's Map, drawn in 1779 - 1783. Cartographic material of Mieg's Map, which consists of 413 sections of a map made at a scale of 1:28,800, and accompanying descriptions (6 volumes, in total ca. 2000 pages of commentaries) impress with their richness and detail.

Several scientific institutions have been participating in the Mieg's Map editing project for several years, including: Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Waldemar Bukowski, M.A.), Pedagogical University of Cracow (Prof. Zdzisław Noga), Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Prof. Andrzej Janeczek) and University of Rzeszów (Prof. Zdzisław Budzyński). The implementation of the project in Vienna is coordinated by the PAN Scientific Centre in Vienna (Prof. Bogusław Dybaś). The work carried out at the Centre consists primarily in preparing for publication (in the original version and in a Polish translation) the text of comments (descriptions) to the map. The Polish academic institutions cooperate closely with the Austrian State Archive in Vienna (Dr. Robert Rill).

The Polish project is part of the international context of the Josephinian and Franciscan land surveys and their editions. Between 1965 and 1974, 12 volumes of maps and 12 volumes of descriptions of the Austrian Netherlands were published. Several years ago, under the aegis of government agencies and national academies of sciences, great editorial initiatives were launched in the countries of the former Habsburg monarchy (mainly Slovenia and Croatia).

To date, the following volumes have been published:
