About the Library

The Library of the Scientific Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Vienna is of scientific nature with focus on humanities. It includes collections in the field of humanities, history of Poland, history of Central and Eastern Europe, history of Galicia, Austrian-Polish relations, German-Polish relations, Polish literature, culture and art, art history, religious studies and sociology.
The collections consist of their own collection of books as well as of these of Otto Forst de Battaglia, a great Slavist, historian and promoter of Polish literature. This collection is a branch of the traditional Polish library Ossolineum in Wroclaw. The collection comprises mainly works on Polish history and history of Galicia and beautiful old editions of Polish literature. They are mostly from the second half of the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century. One of the most valuable pieces of the collection are rare books such as "Kronika" by Marcin Bielski published in 1597 in Krakow.
The reading room is located in the prestigious Copernicus Hall. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, books focusing on the history of Poland, Europe, Galicia and Polonia in Austria as well as publications of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Vienna are available.  Current Polish journals and popular science magazines such as Polityka, Tygodnik Powszechny, Mówią Wieki, National Geographic, Swiat Nauki, wiedza i Życie, Przegląd Techniczny and magazines of Poles in Austria such as Jupiter and POLONIKA are also available.
