Struck by Science

Struck by Science is a podcast series that presents contemporary phenomena, events, and challenges from a scientific perspective
. The goal of the series is to explore social and political issues from an academic approach. In each episode, scientists from different countries and scientific fields are invited to reflect on the scientific approach to the topic at hand.

In the first episode on the topic of "Hate Speech in Political Discourse", Dr. Sonia Horonziak discusses with Dr. Liriam Sponholz. The latter is a post-doc at the German Center for Integration and Migration Research in Berlin (DeZIM-Institut). She also worked as an assistant professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München), was a senior post-doc in Vienna at the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften) and the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt (Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt). "Distance Learning during COVID-19 pandemic" is the title of the second episode and the topic of the interview with our guest Julia Holzer, BEd MSc from the Institute for the Development of Psychology and Education at the University of Vienna. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools had to close several times for long periods of time, forcing teachers, students and parents to organize classes in the form of distance learning. The entire education system had to be adapted for distance learning, which understandably raised many concerns and questions. Our guest discusses these and many other questions about Distance Learning with the Center's expert for scientific contacts Dr. Sonia Horonziak.

In the third episode of our podcast series "Struck by Science", Dr. Sonia Horonziak talks with Dr. Anna Maria Górska, Assistant Professor at the Leon Kozmiński Academy and Director of the Center for Research on Women and Diversity in Organizations at this institution about the situation of women in science. A main topic of discussion is the report "Deepening inequalities: what did COVID-19 reveal about the gendered nature of academic work?" - the report is available at this link https://doi.org/10.1111/gwao.12696) - which analyzes deepening inequalities and what COVID-19 revealed about the nature of academic work in terms of gender.
