Once despised and removed from the public space, graffiti and murals became a valued and protected element of modern cityscape, with some of them acquiring the status of an art. A “street art”. A number of European cities boast about their unique collections – to name just a few, one can single out those from the Danube Canal pathways, from house walls in the 3rd and 7th districts in Vienna; from the Berlin Wall or the Berlin Graffiti Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg; from Brick Lane at the hearth of the East End in London, and others.

Recent decades brought us a real outburst of studies on different aspects of street art as well as on other types on wall writings in their vulgarized or thoroughly practical forms. Ranging from antiquity to the modern period, they demonstrate a long-lasting character of this culture practice.
In his lecture, the author will illuminate the ancient roots of these items of culture with particular emphasis on the finds from Asia Minor. He will also discuss the methods for studying them – from the “notice board”, and “wall view” approaches to the diachronic cross-cultural perspective in the spirit of the longue durée concept. This will let us fully acknowledge the value of these works and learn what they can tell us about their makers.

The talk is part of the ERC-funded project STONE-MASTERS (ERC StG 101040152), which explores the culture of the makers of inscriptions at the close of the Roman Imperial period. The paper will include the epigraphical evidence collected by the Marmora Asiatica project (NCN Sonata Bis 2012/07/E/HS3/03971).
